About Tempur-Pedic
Tempur-Pedic created the memory foam mattress category here in the U.S. Founded in 1992, they grew and grew until they became a household name and got large enough to buy the Sealy Mattress Company. They’re now a public company called Tempur-Sealy and sell mattresses worldwide.
There are two important points of differentiation vs other foam mattresses. First, Tempur-Pedic actually designs and manufactures foam components and mattresses. This speaks to their degree of expertise (most foam mattress brands buy components from suppliers).
Secondly, they have always created premium products. As in any industry, there are companies that make cheaply-priced, lower-quality products. Then there are those that make higher-quality, higher-priced products. Tempur-Pedic has always made high-quality mattresses using premium materials and manufacturing standards. The success of their mattresses and reputation for quality propelled their company to be the largest in the world.
Type of Construction
Tempur-Pedic is famously known for the memory foam mattresses they pioneered. All of their beds are made with different combinations of their proprietary foams they call Tempur material. Since they create their own foams, they keep their exact formulations secret and therefore don’t publish that information. Competitors attack that fact, but I understand why they don’t publish it – like the Coke formula, or the Colonel’s KFC recipe.
They don't make any true innerspring models, but there are some Tempur-Pedic mattresses that have springs. More recently, they've created hybrid models (coil system + memory foam) for those that like the support of an innerspring. Hybrids combine the benefits of foam and innerspring beds.

Tempur-Pedic’s Mattress Collections - An Overview
Adapt Series
The Adapt Series offers a mattress as either an all-foam or a hybrid constructed model. Both are medium in feel and have some newer Tempur innovations. A notable feature is a cool-to-the-touch cover. What’s innovative about the cover design is that the cool touch comes from using a denser, heavier yarn rather than a material being infused into the cover.
Pro-Adapt Series
Firmer to Medium all-foam or hybrid mattresses. Building on the Adapt Series features, these beds have a removable/washable cool-to-the-touch cover. They feature Tempur APR or Advanced Pressure Relief foam. This material is their best at pressure relief, helping make this newer series of mattresses very popular right from the start.
LuxeAdapt Series
There are two all-foam mattresses, a firm and a soft one. These beds are a step up from the Pro-Adapt beds. They feature Tempur APR+ Material, which is their newest innovation. Tempur APR+ is an advancement in conforming and contouring. These mattresses are made with more material for a taller profile. They also feature the Smart Climate Dual Cool Cover.
Pro Breeze
Two cooling mattresses in medium comfort. You can get an all-foam or a foam and spring hybrid mattress. These beds are all about sleeping cool; with (a) a cool to the touch cover, (b) PureCool+ phase change material to create an initial cooling period, and (c) TEMPUR CM+ breathable material to help keep temperatures down all night - up to 3 degrees cooler.

Luxe Breeze
Two cooling all-foam mattresses, a firm and soft. This top-of-the-line collection builds on the Pro Breeze beds by adding a layer of Ventilated TEMPUR APR material, which enables the mattress to maintain a temperature that's up to 8 degrees cooler.

Delivery Method
Tempur-Pedic mattresses are available in select stores and online retailers, and also directly from Tempur-Pedic. These are heavy mattresses usually delivered by a retailer’s in-home delivery crew. Being a premium brand, in-home delivery (also known as white glove delivery) is typically offered for free, along with the removal of an old existing mattress.
Tempur-Pedic FAQs
-
Do I need a box spring for my Tempur-Pedic mattress?
It's important to use a solid foundation for your Tempur-Pedic mattress, but it doesn't necessarily have to be a box spring. There are other options, like adjustable bases and platform beds.
-
Can my Tempur-Pedic mattress go on slats with a platform bed?
Yes, just make sure the slats are not more than 6 inches apart and check your warranty for other specifics.
-
Do Tempur-Pedic mattresses sleep hot?
Memory foam has a reputation for being hot to sleep on, but Tempur-Pedic's cooling technology has come a long way in reducing that. The Luxe Breeze and Pro Breeze collections are especially good at cooling.
Conclusion
Tempur-Pedic has long established itself as the leader in the memory foam mattress market. Because the prices of their mattresses are much higher than competitors, there are reasonable lower-priced alternatives available if the cost is important to you. However, those mattresses are not exactly the same since Tempur-Pedic has perfected its mattress designs over many decades and uses premium methods and materials to achieve the results their customers enjoy. This is why they‘ve continued to grow and remain the leader in the industry they created.
They revamped their entire mattress line-up, introducing the major models with the Adapt, Pro Adapt, AdLuxeapt, and Breeze collections. They all feature the latest Tempur materials that are softer and more conforming, and they also have increasing temperature management features as you go up in price. Their top-end Luxe Breeze beds can keep a bed up to 8 degrees cooler, for example. It's also worth noting that they have a handful of hybrid models, which have innerspring support, in case you prefer a more traditional, bouncy feel.
We've tested all of their mattresses in our facility to evaluate how they feel for all body sizes and sleeping positions, and they all tested very well. You can see our detailed pressure mapping results on the individual mattress pages.
The only negatives are the higher prices, and the characteristics shared by all memory foam beds; they’re not as bouncy as innerspring beds, have a foam smell during an initial break-in period, and can sleep hotter than innerspring beds.
So if you’re looking for a higher-end memory foam or memory foam & innerspring hybrid mattress, Tempur-Pedic is one to seriously consider. They have a great reputation for contouring and support, along with a track record of longevity of their mattresses.
