Why it matters
What makes a mattress truly organic?
We spend about a third of our lives in bed, close to the materials inside our mattress. That is why more families in Miami are looking for a mattress that is genuinely organic, not just described that way.
Words like "natural," "eco" or "green" are not regulated. A mattress can contain a little organic cotton in its cover and still be built mostly from conventional foams. A truly organic mattress is one whose materials and manufacturing are certified by an independent organization, with a paper trail from the farm to the finished product.
Our rule is simple, and it is the same one Naturepedic follows: it's not organic unless it's certified organic.

Organic and non-toxic certifications, explained
Not every certification means the same thing. Some certify organic content; others test for harmful substances or chemical emissions. The best organic mattresses carry both kinds.
GOTS
The Global Organic Textile Standard certifies organic fibers such as cotton and wool, and the way the product is made, from raw material to finished mattress.
GOLS
The Global Organic Latex Standard certifies that latex is organic, traced from the rubber tree to the finished layer.
OCS
The Organic Content Standard verifies the amount of organic material in a product through third-party audits and chain of custody.
EWG VERIFIED®
From the Environmental Working Group. Products must avoid EWG's ingredients of concern and fully disclose their materials.
MADE SAFE®
Screens products for known harmful substances, including toxic chemicals, before they can be certified.
UL GREENGUARD Gold
Tests products for chemical emissions such as VOCs and formaldehyde, for cleaner indoor air.
Good to know: a certification for low emissions or safer ingredients does not by itself make a mattress organic, and an organic cover does not make the whole mattress organic. Ask which certifications apply to the complete mattress you are buying; we will always show you.
Inside the mattress
What to look for, and what to avoid
- Organic cotton and organic wool for comfort layers and covers, with certification for the finished mattress.
- Certified organic latex (GOLS) if you like a buoyant, responsive feel, or a latex-free design if you prefer.
- No polyurethane foam. Most conventional mattresses are built with this petroleum-based foam; certified organic mattresses like Naturepedic avoid it completely.
- No chemical flame retardants. Every mattress sold in the U.S. must meet federal flammability standards, but that does not require chemical flame retardants.
- Full disclosure. A brand that lists every material and is verified by independent organizations has nothing to hide.

Questions
Organic mattress FAQ
Is an organic mattress the same as a non-toxic mattress?
Not exactly. "Organic" describes how the materials are grown and processed, and is verified by standards like GOTS and GOLS. "Non-toxic" refers to avoiding harmful substances and emissions, verified by programs like MADE SAFE, EWG VERIFIED and UL GREENGUARD Gold. Naturepedic mattresses are designed to meet both kinds of standards; certifications vary by model.
Is a certified organic mattress 100% organic?
Even the best organic mattresses include some components that cannot be organic, such as steel coils. That is why we focus on independent certifications rather than percentages: they tell you exactly what has been verified.
Do organic mattresses use flame retardants?
All mattresses sold in the United States must meet federal flammability standards. Naturepedic meets them without chemical flame retardants.
Which organic mattress is best for couples?
The Naturepedic EOS models are built with layers that can be arranged differently on each side of the bed, so each person can have the firmness they prefer. Come in and we will set up both sides with you.
Do you have a latex-free organic mattress?
Yes. The Naturepedic Chorus is a certified organic mattress made without latex. Ask us about other latex-free configurations as well.
Can I try an organic mattress before buying?
Yes. You can try Naturepedic in our showroom at 15516 Biscayne Blvd, North Miami Beach. We recommend booking an appointment so we can give you our full attention.
